When it became evident, the freight and passenger traffic of the StLB (today Steiermarkbahn und Bus) had to be separated in order to shorten the travel times, the operations management decided to the development of a railcar with diesel-electric power. The Viennese company Knotz, which was known at the time for the production of individual constructions in rail vehicle even in small numbers, was contracted to develop these railcars.

The VT 35, which was subsequently procured from Jenbacher Werke in 1999, is also based on the designs of the Knotz railcars. It was at first only used as reinforcement for the school trains, due to incompatibles with the railcars of the first series. Only since extensive adjustments were made to the older vehicles, it can now be used freely.

The new edition of the VT35 models is equipped with a new circuit board with a 6-pin NEM651 interface and the running characteristics and driving noise have been improved somewhat. For digitization only the dummy plug has to be exchanged for a suitable, commercially available decoder (Art.No. MX622N). Alternatively, the delivery can be digitized ex works (item no. H90-DIGITAL). The sound up-grade will be available soon.
