News 2025.05 - S-Bahn Berlin Re-Design

The best S-Bahn ever!

The 481/482 series consists of electric railcars for conductor rail operation on the S-Bahn. With around 500 quarter trains, it is the most frequently used series of the S-Bahn Berlin. The first pre-series quarter train was presented to the public in 1996. As part of the ongoing refurbishment of the Longevity Project, it is planned to be in service until the 2030s. Since 2019, S-Bahn Berlin has been overhauling and modernising over three hundred quarter trains.

This involves completely dismantling the vehicles, removing corrosion, repairing the solebars if necessary and then painting them in a new ‘redesign’ colour concept based on that of the 483/484 series. Over 400 half-trains have now been overhauled. A great success for the Berliners and a clear signal against the increasingly fast-moving throwaway society.

We also want to jump on this bandwagon and are giving our models another makeover. The new editions of the 481/482 series models have been modernised from the ground up! After the Urbanliner Berlin, the S-Bahn Berlin is now the second model series to be completely converted to the underfloor drives from the ALX family. The complete electronics have been moved to the driving trailer.

The space that was freed up was filled with a huge weight. The resulting extremely low centre of gravity and the exemplary drive of two bogies in the motor car, coupled with the slow and quiet but very powerful bell-type armature motors, transform the model into a small prototype vehicle.

Even if the new driving characteristics of the models from the late nineties are a really big hit, we haven't stopped there with the model upgrades. Of course, the vehicles in the new edition have new car numbers again, and of course we have again made sure that a half train consisting of two quarter trains has consecutive car numbers.

But what really deserves the ‘redesign’ title is the new Flexprint light board, which replaces the strange light guide construction from the previous series. From now on, micro-LEDs illuminate both headlights evenly. It is possible to retrofit older models. We will offer a corresponding retrofit kit as soon as the series has been finalised.

The first electric trams! The first Vienna tram line to be electrified by the Vienna Tramway Company (WT) was the ‘Northern Transversal Line’. This was a combination of sections previously operated as horse-drawn tramways, which Viennese people today associate with parts of lines 2, 5, or O. The prerequisite for the conversion was the construction of the Leopoldstadt power station, which initially supplied the necessary energy.

Improved new edition of a legend! When it became apparent in the 1970s that freight and passenger transport on the StLB would have to be separated in order to reduce journey times, the management of the state railways decided to develop a railcar with diesel-electric power transmission. The contract for its manufacture was awarded to the Vienna-based company Knotz, which at that time was known for producing custom designs in rail vehicle construction, even in small quantities. The first railcar was delivered to the Murtalbahn in the fall of 1980. Many more examples of this vehicle family were to follow until 1999, going to the StLB, the Zillertalbahn, and the ÖBB.
