News 2025.08 - The first red electric Salzburger Lokalbahn

The first „Salzburger Lokalbahn“!

In July 1907, the ‘Rote Elektrische’ (Red Electric) connection from Salzburg Local Railway Station to Drachenloch station was opened, and shortly afterwards the section of the line from the German border was electrified. As early as its first year of operation, 15 passenger cars were in service. However, the city and local railway also always transported goods, especially marble, sand and cement. In the interwar period, a buffet car was even added to increase the attractiveness of the railway.

The ‘Rote Elektrische’ remained part of the Salzburg cityscape as a tram until 1953. The conversion to a work car enabled the STEG MC 21 to serve for many more years as the M41, pulling the same freight cars, only this time loaded with gravel and paving stones.

The models of the first Salzburg Local Railway are produced in small series based on the popular vintage tram models. For the first time, we can also offer the models with bell-type armature drives. Simply order the upgrade item UPG-GLO-OLD and we will upgrade your model!

So couple a freight car behind your red electric locomotive, but do it quickly! We have used the past few months to complete the last available housings. Now all models are available for the last time; unfortunately, we will not be able to produce these models again.

    2025-10-23

The first electric trams! The first Vienna tram line to be electrified by the Vienna Tramway Company (WT) was the ‘Northern Transversal Line’. This was a combination of sections previously operated as horse-drawn tramways, which Viennese people today associate with parts of lines 2, 5, or O. The prerequisite for the conversion was the construction of the Leopoldstadt power station, which initially supplied the necessary energy.

    2025-10-16

Improved new edition of a legend! When it became apparent in the 1970s that freight and passenger transport on the StLB would have to be separated in order to reduce journey times, the management of the state railways decided to develop a railcar with diesel-electric power transmission. The contract for its manufacture was awarded to the Vienna-based company Knotz, which at that time was known for producing custom designs in rail vehicle construction, even in small quantities. The first railcar was delivered to the Murtalbahn in the fall of 1980. Many more examples of this vehicle family were to follow until 1999, going to the StLB, the Zillertalbahn, and the ÖBB.
