News 2025.10 - The first electric trams in Vienna
The first electric trams!
The first Vienna tram line to be electrified by the Vienna Tramway Company (WT) was the ‘Northern Transversal Line’. This was a combination of sections previously operated as horse-drawn tramways, which Viennese people today associate with parts of lines 2, 5, or O. The prerequisite for the conversion was the construction of the Leopoldstadt power station, which initially supplied the necessary energy.

The WT operated 30 motor cars numbered 1m to 30m, which were specially manufactured by the Graz Waggonfabrik. The cars were state-of-the-art at the time and offered 20 seats on longitudinal benches. Initially, power was supplied via ‘roller current collectors’, which were later replaced by lyre brackets.
The new edition of the ‘First Electric’ includes car numbers 4m, 8m and 15m. As usual with Halling, we offer the models motorised or as high-quality display models. All models come with a comprehensive set of finely printed matching target plates and colour-coordinated accessories.

Improved new edition of a legend!
When it became apparent in the 1970s that freight and passenger transport on the StLB would have to be separated in order to reduce journey times, the management of the state railways decided to develop a railcar with diesel-electric power transmission. The contract for its manufacture was awarded to the Vienna-based company Knotz, which at that time was known for producing custom designs in rail vehicle construction, even in small quantities. The first railcar was delivered to the Murtalbahn in the fall of 1980. Many more examples of this vehicle family were to follow until 1999, going to the StLB, the Zillertalbahn, and the ÖBB.
