News 2024.05 - ForCity Smart Tampere

Tampereen ratikka!

The Tampere tramway, originally Tampereen ratikka, was put into operation in August 2021. Two tram lines with a total length of 16 km and 24 stops are served and trains run every 7 ½ minutes. After a long planning period, construction of the standard-gauge lines began in 2016. This will be Finland's first standard-gauge tramway system.

The lines are designed for a maximum speed of 70 km/h and the contact wire voltage is 750 volts direct current. As with most of the newer tram networks, bidirectional carriages are used for flexible operation, and some of the end points have reversing tracks, but no turning loops.

The eight-axle, low-floor bidirectional ForCity Smart Artic X34 trams are three-part articulated trams with four bogies, the end sections are semi-mounted on the centre body. They are built by Transtech, a subsidiary of Škoda Transportation. The design of the tram and the colour of the car were announced in October 2018; the brick red was chosen by public vote. The "nicknames" of the cars or the many different artistic designs of the vehicles already in use were also chosen by majority vote.

It is a great honour for the small Viennese model railway manufacturer HALLING Modelle to be able to realise the very successful prototype in a model! The models of the ForCity Smart Artic X34 are hardly inferior to the large prototype in terms of driving comfort and technical equipment. They feature a detailed roof and interior design with exemplary seat occupancy.

The elaborate printing of the models was carried out at the customer's request in high-quality and labour-intensive metallic paint. The model can be individualised using the number and destination plate decals supplied.

The powered models are equipped with an NEM652 interface. Any commercially available NEM652-compatible decoder is suitable for digitisation; we recommend the MX600R from ZIMO.

For subsequent motorisation of static model HALLING Modelle offers simple bogie drives for clipping in (ANT-ALX-210-H0) or fully wired motorisation sets with two drive units (ANT-TAM-H0) for more demanding routes.

Improved new edition of a legend! When it became apparent in the 1970s that freight and passenger transport on the StLB would have to be separated in order to reduce journey times, the management of the state railways decided to develop a railcar with diesel-electric power transmission. The contract for its manufacture was awarded to the Vienna-based company Knotz, which at that time was known for producing custom designs in rail vehicle construction, even in small quantities. The first railcar was delivered to the Murtalbahn in the fall of 1980. Many more examples of this vehicle family were to follow until 1999, going to the StLB, the Zillertalbahn, and the ÖBB.

The first „Salzburger Lokalbahn“! In July 1907, the ‘Rote Elektrische’ (Red Electric) connection from Salzburg Local Railway Station to Drachenloch station was opened, and shortly afterwards the section of the line from the German border was electrified. As early as its first year of operation, 15 passenger cars were in service. However, the city and local railway also always transported goods, especially marble, sand and cement. In the interwar period, a buffet car was even added to increase the attractiveness of the railway.

News 2025.07 - The first electric Trams in Graz

    2025-08-06

Back to a new century! The Graz tramway was electrically powered from 1898. The already uniformly green set dates from the years 1900 to 1912 before the open railcars were modernised, windscreens were installed and the lyre bars gradually gave way to the more reliable scissor bars. First individually, later as a set, the Grazer Tramway brought the people of Graz into the city.
