The ULF is back!

After a years-long dry spell, the popular Vienna models are now available again! Due to the design-related high maintenance intensity and repeated problems with the hydraulics, the ULF is not particularly popular with the staff of Wiener Linien. In recent years, the hydraulic systems that could raise and lower the entire train have been replaced by rigid iron rods. With an entrance height of 240 mm, the ULF is now no longer the lowest tram in the world (197 mm), but much more popular.

Typically Viennese! Say what you like about us Viennese, but we know what we like and what we don't like! Back when ‘Der Ulf’ made its first rounds in Vienna with its unique design, highly innovative drive concept and the lowest entry height in the world, it was immediately clear to all of us that it was no good and would never be any good. The real trams we've been riding so far are much better, quieter, definitely more attractive and they even smell better.

    2025-10-23

The first electric trams! The first Vienna tram line to be electrified by the Vienna Tramway Company (WT) was the ‘Northern Transversal Line’. This was a combination of sections previously operated as horse-drawn tramways, which Viennese people today associate with parts of lines 2, 5, or O. The prerequisite for the conversion was the construction of the Leopoldstadt power station, which initially supplied the necessary energy.

Vienna tests the ‘Uber-ULF’! The ULF (abbreviation for Ultra Low Floor) is a low-floor tram vehicle that was originally developed by SGP Verkehrstechnik GmbH and ELIN EBG Traction for Wiener Linien and was later taken over by Siemens. The innovative trams have been in service in Vienna and the university city of Oradea in Romania since the mid-1990s. Today, a highly unusual further development is coming from there to Vienna for its first test runs.
